There was a story in the Examiner today about two youths ('yutes) who robbed a guy of his laptop at gun point down at the Yerba Buena gardens. They were caught in the act by police, an amazing rarity, but will probably be let go soon enough to prey on more of San Francisco's citizens. If you ever read the SF Examiner online, they have a blog called "Law and Disorder" that describes a number of bay area crime incidents. While the ones that make it here are typically just the ones that are unusual or even funny, it is shocking how much crime happens under the radar. After reading for a few weeks, it is clear that petty theft (cell phone and laptop snatching, wallets, purses, etc.) is getting way, way out of hand. The feds want the states to release from overcrowded prisons thousands of these "non-violent" types into the population. You can imagine where this will lead with regards to petty thefts.
I think that government pays for a lot of things that we shouldn't pay for but, honestly, I will pay as much tax as it takes if we can just lock all of these lowlife up. Get them out of our schools, get them out of the families that suffer their behavior, and lock them away for as long as necessary. The majority don't become better people later in life; they just find more acceptable ways to bleed society. I saw in Oakland that they stated they have 2400 thefts per month and only 3 investigators. So, basically, unless you are caught in the act, you are likely to get away with theft.
If we don't get this under control, this is going to lead to vigilantism and a breakdown of society.
